Confusion. Polarization. Conflict. Fear. Disbalance.
That is a short but accurate description of our civilization in 2020. We lost trust in almost everything. Everyone has their own opinion about everything, relying on their (dis)information sources, rejecting everything that contradicts already established firm conviction.
Simultaneously, in different observers’ eyes, Covid19 is a threat to our life and a fictitious nothing. The medical science will be our savior, or it is the source of the greatest con of all times.
We stand on a sharp edge that divides us, creating an unseen unbalance of mental health, endangering our common sense, and disabling us to see what is going on clearly.
It is too easy to forget that the human body, its health, and its functions are not black and white. When we speak about medicine and healing, there is nothing absolutely right or wrong. Some procedures work, and others don’t. Some people respond well to allopathic treatments, and others must seek help in traditional approaches. Some will be healed by faith, and some are condemned to suffering despite it.
The rigidity in believing only in one approach, their own, was almost a monopoly of modern science and medicine. It was they who didn’t want to hear about traditional healing methods and holistic approaches to health. Those days, the alternatives strike back, creating a worldwide mistrust in modern science and pharmacy. Are they right? Should we reject everything science accomplished so far and return to imaginary holistic heaven where no viruses (which do not exist at all) can harm us?
No doubt, there is something shady in the whole modern medical system. The market drives it. The more sick people, the bigger the profit. That sucks. It is bound to create manipulation, and it is definitely not good for the health of humanity.
I remember one lovely legend about traditional ayurvedic doctors in Vedic India. They were paid for health, not for sickness. If someone gets ill, it was the responsibility of a doctor. A sick patient meant a deduction in their salary. If they wanted to be rich, they were motivated to keep the whole village healthy. Now, imagine that kind of motivation driving our modern doctors!
However, accusing the whole profession of participation in a worldwide scale deception of making people seek is not only too much but a blatant offense to many honest, fair, and noble people who dedicated their lives to save others. Their sin was (and still is) the sin of not listening, not being openminded enough, and not the sin of conspiracy.
If you are now in line with those who don’t believe in the health danger due to the new coronavirus, please don’t repeat the same mistake. If you think that the only protection we need is a robust immune system, the facts are against your belief. If you are questioning the need for a vaccine, you should, by all means. But don’t forget that it was the vaccine that saved many lives. Poliovirus is an excellent example comparable to the present situation. In about 98% of cases, it causes only a mild illness, with no symptoms, whereas sometimes attacks nerve cells and fewer than 1% become paralyzed. The vaccine eliminated polio from the list of dangerous diseases.
However, by all means, the main focus of health care should be prevention, and that means aggressive education about strengthening the immune system by appropriate diet and lifestyle. Alternative and traditional healthcare systems indeed offer much more in-depth knowledge about such procedures than modern medicine. But, it is also true that some of the practitioners of such systems are using the present situation, turning people against the medical profession, for their own benefit (the more confusion and distrust they create, the more money will go in their direction).
You should know that the healthy immune system is not almighty. It is not a guarantee that nothing will harm you. When Europeans came to South America, they killed more indigenous people unintentionally than intentionally. Around 90% of the original population was killed by diseases caused by viruses and bacteria brought by Cortez, Pizarro, and the others (otherwise healthy people without symptoms). Can you imagine a more robust immune system than those of the people living in accordance with nature and their land in South America during those times? Probably not. Alas, it was not enough. Their bodies were not accustomed to new viruses, and they died from, according to European standards, non-deadly and simple diseases.
The real conspiracy against health hides in promoting one-sided, overly passionate, and imbalanced views about our lives, bodies, and reality. If modern science and medicine are doing that, they should be corrected. If anybody else is doing that, pushing us into a state of distrust and chaos, endangering others’ lives, they should not be listened to.
It is my hope that the present sharp conflict between different opinions about what we should do will evolve into a broader understanding of human life and healthy living. The key is always – the balance. It is equally valuable for our personal life and the advancement of knowledge in general.
