The Purpose of Personality

Among the most intimate and intuitive aspects of our experience is the sense of being “someone”—of being “me.” This sense of self is a recurring subject in discussions of how consciousness develops. But is the “me” truly the center of our existence? What becomes of it in higher states of consciousness? And as that strong sense of identity we call “me” begins to loosen its grip, how are our relationships with others affected—and what does it even mean to function without it?
